I used to open my calls to people with my name, the fact that they "didn't know me from a bar of soap" but I may have a product that could be of use in their production. From there we just started talking (assuming they could talk then).
At that point (as long as they were making the right noises) my curiosity took over and I learned a lot about their business and what was important to them. From that point selling to them (or walking away for that matter) was a lot easier.
